Mentors for Our Community's Youth

The Village Network of Mt. Vernon/Knox County has started a School-Based Mentoring Program that focuses on developing trusting relationships between at-risk children and their mentors.

The program is being funded in part by a grant from Knox County Job and Family Services. Youth are referred to the program by Mt. Vernon City Schools and Knox County Schools and range in age from 6-18 years old.

If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a mentor through our Knox County Network, contact Emily Schubel at 740.397.0533.

Do You Have Young Children or Grandchildren?

These are some stimulating activities you can do to promote positive growth for your own young children or grandchildren:

  • Read. A child is never to young to be read to. Young children typically enjoy colorful books with big print and brightly colored pictures.
  • Eat Together. Eat together at a table with as little distraction as possible. Eating together promotes conversation and story telling. This is a great time to tell children or grandchildren stories about experiences in your youth.
  • Play Games. Sitting down on the floor with young children is a great way to be on their level. Playing simple card and board games is a fun way to engage children in learning that they will enjoy.
  • Color or Draw Pictures. Coloring and drawing pictures stimulates a childs creativity and also helps him or her to develop dexterity working with crayons and paints.
